walking in step

Sunday evening was one of those first perfect moments of spring where warmth had burst forth entirely, humidity was not high yet, and the bugs were not yet stifling.  Call us brave or call us crazy, we took the pups to the park for their first round of leash training.  As expected, they weren't big fans.  Like defiant toddlers they would sit whenever they had the chance and look up at us as if to say, I'm not taking another step.  I want to lead myself.  We made a little progress by the end of the walk as the dragging had lessened and they were actually starting to walk in step with us.

It's hard for me to remember that Sawyer started out that way.  It didn't take him long to realize that giving in, allowing us to lead, and walking alongside us was his best bet.  It was much more peaceful and enjoyable that way... Not to mention less exhausting than trying to tug and pull and walk against our flow.

It made me wonder if God feels this way about us sometimes.  We selfishly tug and pull away from His guidance and wisdom, thinking we know best and that we can adequately lead ourselves.  We want to be independent.  We want to figure things out for ourselves.  And eventually we realize how naive and wrong and stupid we are...  We realize that walking in step with our Master is the most peaceful and fulfilling way to journey.  It allows us to see much more than we would have.  It allows us to go places we never would have gone.
